About this deal

Crafting an erotic poem must be hard for anyone but reading a romantic poem is the easiest thing one could do to create an impeccable sensual moment. Some contemporary spins on carpe diem poems and aubades sometimes have little to do with romantic love at all. Joe Wenderoth’s sequence Letters to Wendy’s, for example, twists the longing for a person into a more modern, bewildered, mix of passion and consumerism. The absinthe-tinged love affair between Rimbaud and Verlaine is the stuff of literary legend. The 17-year-old Rimbaud wrote to the 27-year-old Verlaine—whose wife was pregnant at the time—and soon moved into their home in Paris in 1871. Shortly after, the two lovers fled to London and lived in relative squalor, spending days on end at the Reading Room in the British Museum because the pens and ink were free. Their relationship grew extremely bitter, and eventually came to an end after Verlaine was sentenced to prison for shooting Rimbaud and wounding him in the left wrist. Rimbaud would end up writing influential classics such as A Season in Hell before abandoning poetry altogether at 20. During their travels in London, the two collaborated on a sonnet called Lines on the Arsehole , a ribald tribute to, um, the anus. Verlaine contributed an octet and Rimbaud contributed a sestet. Here are some salacious sections from both poets.

This poem benefits greatly from being read out loud due to the use of alliteration. The sounds of nonsense words are half the fun. Here are a few lines: Donne is considered to be the most prominent member of the Metaphysical poets, a group of seventeenth century British lyricists who used complex metaphors called “conceits” in sonnets and poems about topics like love or religion. Though he became an Anglican priest in 1615 and was later appointed Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, he spent much of his early years as an educated womanizer. Maybe his early experiences helped him when writing these eloquently cheeky lines from To His Mistress Going to Bed:Here, too, is a story. The deceased have come to appreciate that death is a trifling matter. Grown clear-sighted with time, they now recognize that life’s ultimate rewards are few and fleeting. But they once felt otherwise, wholeheartedly. So you’ll sometimes behold the poet expressing through words (the only trusty tool she has) an impatience with words. You feel this powerfully in the closing lines of Bishop’s “One Art.” The poem, a villanelle, begins with a confident nonchalance: And yet one arrives somehow, finds himself loosening the hooks of her dress in a strange bedroom — feels the autumn dropping its silk and linen leaves about her ankles.” — “ Arrival” by William Carlos Williams The dead are mourning not their lost lives but the loss of this conviction that life is a priceless gift of radiance and beauty and consummation. They are mourning lost youth’s lost illusions, and with this realization the poem broadens until it encompasses all of us in our aging bodies, including one melancholic elderly poet. (Housman was in his sixties when this little verse was published.) On the other hand, Housman did have the compensation (not given to the rest of us) of knowing he’d composed one of the most heartbreaking tiny poems in the language.

In this poem, Milne describes the humorous desires of a child who is entertaining himself by thinking about everything that a king is allowed to do that he is not. The best part is that all of these are free to do, so a dirty poem could be a great gift option if you're a little strapped for cash this year. I am hypnotized. Sleepwalking to the rhythm of your words, Never wishing to wake.” — “ Hypnotized” by Michael FaudetFor true romantics—or conniving contemporary shepherds—there is still a wealth of persuasive, loving examples to choose from, as well as poets turning their rhetoric toward an argument for intimacy. Those seeking traditional carpe diem poems, sonnet sequences, aubades or more contemporary meditations on seduction or passion, might look at the following: So, if you are seeking a type of poetry that includes ‘seductive love poems’ and is a little different from the previous outmoded poems, then keep the ball rolling because this hub is going to cover a variety of erotic poems to help your significant other bring in the mood. In this particular poem, the speaker entreats his mistress to join him in bed. He begs her to remove her clothing, insisting that he will be unable to sleep until his “solider” has performed his task. Anybody who has ever taught a poetry class has encountered the exasperated student inquiring, “ Why can’t poets just say what they mean?” Or: “ Why all this double talk?” It’s easy to dismiss such questions as naïve, but the truth is that everyone, poets and poetry lovers included, occasionally entertains the feeling: a gathering annoyance with poetry’s indirection, its saying while not quite saying.
