However, it’s those gin distilleries in our little corner of the world that are making some big waves. With its extensive peatland, pure clear waters and proud distilling heritage, it’s no surprise that Argyll & the Isles have earned the reputation of Scotland’s Whisky Coast. The pair use Juniper, Heather, Rosehip, Peppercorn and Citrus alongside Silver Birch Tree sap from trees in the local Kincardine Castle Estate. Esker will be the first Scottish Gin we know of to use Birch Tree sap in its recipe, with the distinctive ingredient giving the new gin a refreshing sweetness; Birch Tree sap is also renowned for its health-boosting properties. Our gin school opens in May 2021 and is a wonderful way to spend a few holiday hours. During the blending course you will experiment with pure botanical distillates to create a truly bespoke spirit, tailored to your tastes. Throughout the afternoon you will learn about the history of gin, tasting notes for the various distillates and our production processes, incluing a short tour of the distillery. The emphasis on fun but we hope it will be educational and informative too. In the same guide, Bunnahabhain is rated as the Scottish distillery with the best views and Jura, the best for the beautiful boat journey to reach it.

ALDI’S 2023 CHRISTMAS GIN RANGE GIVES GIN DRINKERS SOMETHING TO CHEERS ABOUT

Oban Distillery, perched on the picturesque harbour, is one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries. It’s nice and close to Oban Whisky & Fine Wines Shop which has a huge range of single malts, including some rare and collectable whiskies. Here you can while away the time engrossed in whisky chat with the passionate owners who are happy to pass on their expertise. They've recently returned home to St Andrew's and added a ‘Distil Your Own’ experience to their tour offering, inviting visitors to create their own recipe from a selection of botanicals and distil a 70cl bottle of gin to take home. GLASGOW: CROSSBILL GIN On Islay, Kilchoman and Ardnahoe are the newest distilleries while Bowmore is thought to be one of the oldest in Scotland, notable for malting its own barley. At Caol Ila, you can see large-scale production while Bruichladdich is refurbished in the old Victorian style. Ardberg produces one of the peatiest flavours while Bunnahabhain produces a milder, unpeated whisky. Lagavulin produces one of Scotland’s most famous whiskies while Laphroaig is the bestselling whisky on Islay.

Kintyre Pink Gin is uniquely distilled with Scottish raspberries and oats, giving it a delicate fruity flavour with a creamy finish, redolent of that most Scottish of desserts, Cranachan. One of Scotland's smallest commercial distilleries, Strathearn produce four main gins currently; the Classic, the Citrus, the Heather Rose gin and the Oaked Highland gin. We try to keep our suppliers local, including using produce from our poly tunnel in the estate walled garden to keep our food miles nice and low. Here, you can expect a breadth and depth of whisky experiences like no other. All set in an incredible, ever-changing landscape that will take your breath away. Twelve botanicals go in to making Kintyre Gin to achieve the characteristics of this very flavoursome and well-balanced spirit. Ten of these are commonly used in craft gin production and two are unique to us. The two unique ones are sheep sorrel and Icelandic moss, chosen because they grow in abundance on Torrisdale Castle Estate– where our distillery is based. Icelandic moss is actually a lichen and is an indicator of good air quality which we are blessed with here in Kintyre.
