Expand old poems, develop characters mentioned in them (Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil, the Barrow-wight).

There is no other fantasy author quite like Tolkien and here his world is brought to life in breathtaking detail.

The perilous journey across mountains, forests, and rivers tests them, endangers them, and ultimately divides them. VIII · Fog on the Barrow-downs — Travelling through the Barrow-downs, the hobbits are imprisoned by Barrow-wights in a barrow, from which they are rescued again by Tom Bombadil. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Together the couple achieved the task, but Beren died immediately after, inspiring such grief in Lúthien that she too laid down and died. After a failed attempt to cross the Misty Mountains over the Redhorn Pass, the Fellowship take the perilous path through the Mines of Moria.

IV · A Short Cut to Mushrooms — They meet Farmer Maggot from taking a short cut, and he gives them some of his prized mushrooms. Still in thrall to the evil Saruman, the Shire needs a champion, forcing the hobbits to mount a rebellion in the fateful Scouring of the Shire.

VI - The Old Forest - Although trying to avoid it, the hobbits get lost and travel to the River Withywindle, the "queerest part of the whole wood". V · The Bridge of Khazad-dûm — Attacked by orcs and trolls, the Fellowship tries to make their way to the bridge of Khazad-dum, but Gandalf falls during a confrontation with a Balrog on the bridge. The author famously described the Second Age as "a dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told," but clearly, there was more story than first met the eye.

Book II chronicles Frodo's stay at Rivendell, where a plan is hatched at the Council of Elrond to destroy the Ring in Mordor. Andy has a rather gruff cracked voice which is not the most pleasant to listen to, for my ears anyway, and doesn't suit a lot of the characters. Shippey had noticed the alternation at the start of The Lord of the Rings between moments of dangerous adventure and of recuperation. The Council decides that the Ring must be destroyed, but that can be done only by sending it to the fire of Mount Doom in Mordor where it was forged. g., Tom Bombadil) they eventually come to Bree, where they meet Strider, another friend of Gandalf who leads them the rest of the way to Rivendell, through further hardships. It tells the backstory of Sméagol and his friend Déagol, and how they came upon the Ring after Sauron was temporarily defeated. Sam finds Frodo by the river and they cross it, thereby breaking up the Fellowship and continuing to Mount Doom on their own.

IX - At the Sign of the Prancing Pony - The hobbits reach the The Prancing Pony inn at Bree, where Frodo uses a false name, Underhill.

The Black Riders pursue Frodo into the Ford of Bruinen, where they are swept away by flood waters summoned by Elrond. Bilbo celebrates his eleventy-first (111th) birthday and leaves the Shire suddenly, passing the Ring to Frodo Baggins, his cousin [a] and heir. The Hobbits take an evasive shortcut to Bucklebury Ferry, where they meet their friend Merry Brandybuck.
