The complex characters we follow in her latest novel centre on Cleo Forsum Pryce who we first meet in the present day when she is charged with attempted murder. Usually, being in a library space, with the books and the atmosphere they created, acted like a shield to protect me from the excesses of being around other people.

The story has a dual timeline - Cleo wants a divorce in the present day from her husband she's clearly still in love with.

As well as the main plot, Dorothy Koomson also makes important social commentary on how Black characters are removed or stereotyped from novels and TV shows and how it has to stop. Not too sure how to describe this book, other than the fact that this is a unique book, a plot which I won’t forget.

She just didn’t feel very realistic to me, which isn’t a problem I’ve ever had before with Koomson’s characters.Writing is all she's ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination. This was a totally engrossing tale of past crimes and control, and tension and suspense are in plentiful supply. Mais para a frente, conforme vão surgindo algumas revelações surpreendentes, a história ganha um novo ritmo, tornando-se de leitura compulsiva. I really liked that although this was clearly set after covid the mentions of covid felt natural and it wasn’t a main plot point but was just referred to in passing as a fact of life.

At its heart, this is a tale of obsession, which I found fascinating (though it took a while to get there), but then so much other stuff started happening with murders and revenge that this primary theme that I wanted to learn more about got buried. Narrated by Cleo, over two different timelines of past and present, the pacing is fast and exciting - forever needing to know more information. It’s something that happens to them because it’s something that happens to Black people just trying to live their lives every day but it’s not the main plot and this is not a book about racism. A unusual and thrilling tale of long kept secrets and dangerous obsession, combined with a cast of very strong characters. There is a split timeline so in the present, Cleo is an author – her book, The Baking Detective, is being adapted into a successful TV series and she’s working on the scripts. Dorothy Koomson has always been one of my favourite authors - I have absolutely loved every single one I have read, and this one didn't disappoint.
