If you love history, learning new information about the world around you, love trivia, and were someone who often wondered what that little paragraph sign was in word documents then you will enjoy this book very much. Think of how much historical context is written into Thackeray's Vanity Fair; how much social history around the early 19th Century, all effortlessly woven in to a cracking good yarn. Most of them are printed with a very narrow gutter strip in the middle and then a wide white margin on the outside.

And just a week or two after I finished it, I happened into a conversation at church about pilcrows, of all things. Richly illustrated, ranging across time, typographies, and countries, Shady Characters will delight and entertain all who cherish the unpredictable and surprising in the writing life. First of all, I loved the cover of this book, and I’m excited to see that the covers of the next two instalments, Cold Clay and Mirror Lake, line up with this one to create a cute scene from Shady Hollow. Officially known as the octothorpe, it apparently derives originally from the Latin libra (scales) pondo (to weigh). More than a mere catalog of curious trivia, it’s an absolutely fascinating blend of history, design, sociology, and cultural poetics — highly recommended.More than a few things don’t add up in the Springfield household, but Vera will have to tread carefully, since, with Orville’s attention on the election, she may be more exposed than ever.

As a maintainer, it was great to feel a real part of the mission…some programs do not include you that way. Curt Herzstark, its inventor, thinking it his only way out, designed the Curta to appease his captors — and, after the liberation of the notorious Buchenwald camp in which he was imprisoned, found his way to the tiny principality of Liechtenstein to see his blueprints put into production.

More usefully, the twisted road to modern typography takes you past some genuinely interesting historical waypoints. One distance plus another distance is a third, and all three can be read off a pair of logarithmic scales lined up next to each other.

May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text. But for the first few decades of the company’s existence, it specialised in electronic “instruments” such as the oscilloscopes, signal generators and other tools that an engineer might use to design or test an electrical or electronic circuit. The first book in the Shady Hollow series, in which we are introduced to the village of Shady Hollow, a place where woodland creatures live together in harmony—until a curmudgeonly toad turns up dead and the local reporter has to solve the case.If you are interested in or curious about how certain punctuation marks have come about and have been used through history, you probably should enjoy this book. There are many surprises and amusing facts - such as the large variety of dashes, and how many of these ornate marks are due to scribes being lazy. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
